For this activity, students will have an opportunity to write and share instructions for preparing Mercy's favorite snack, warm toast  with a great deal of butter. This activity has two parts: Writing Instructions and Sharing Instructions.

Writing Instructions

Students will need to work to write very clear instructions on how to make warm toast  with a great deal of butter.

This Powerpoint Starter can help guide students. The images are already provided and there is space to type each step of the directions on a new slide.

 Directions Starter

To use the starter you need to click on the link and let it open. Then, right click and choose Edit slides. Finally, click File Save As and give the file a new name for each student.

Sharing Instructions

Once students have created their directions, they will want to see how clear they are!

Gather all of the necessary materials:

  • Toaster
  • Bread
  • Butter
  • Spatula
  • Plate

Students can trade printed instructions and try them out in small groups, or the teacher can show a powerpoint on the screen and follow several example sets of directions as a class.

The key is, that we have to follow the directions EXACTLY as they are written- nothing extra, nothing less. This is a great lead for a discussion about writing clearly and simply.

Of course, a great finish is to all share the snack together!
